A propos de cet article
A lovely and complete set of this fine and definitive survey of British ornithology, complete in 12 volumes published between 1953 and 1963. First Edition, First Printings in each case. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format copies, thus uncommon in the trade. Clean, lightly toned of interiors, some bumping to tips, spine heads and feet, but minimal additional rubbing to extremities; one volume's front board cloth is rubbed and waffled a bit, else quite fine looking and great looking on the shelf. Bound in publisher's original dark green cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spines. Many volumes about Near Fine in condition and appearance. Imperial octavo in format, measuring 8" wide by 10 3/4" tall. Each volume top-stained in blue. Previous owner's signature only at first free endpaper of first volume. Eleven volumes feature Brodart-protected, illustrated, original, unclipped paper dust jackets. "63s" and other prices and publisher's or bookseller's stickers affixed neatly to inner dust jacket flap bottoms. Some moderate wear to the panels thereof, some chipping and short, closed tears here and there, sunned evenly at spines, but fully intact. George E. Lodge's work as illustrator, he having been also a leading British ornithologist (1860-1954) and an acknowledged expert on falcons and falconry, greatly augments David Armitage Bannerman's magisterial compendium. This is a sterling study and exploration of birds and ornithology by the man who used to Curate for the British Museum of Natural History (1919-1952) (Wikipedia). Each of the 426 different species covered here is depicted, explained, represented and accounted for in terms of their appearance, notes of identification, navigation, breeding or mating and migrations. Joins other volumes published by Oliver and Boyd of, for example, The Birds of West and Equatorial Africa; Birds of Cyprus; Birds of the Sudan; Birds of Burman; Birds of Borneo; and Some Game Birds of West Africa, among others, some being also by Bannerman. Illustrated fully by Lodge in view of 377 paintings thereof and representing 426 species, all in, with each painting being tissue-guarded and captioned, verso. Collated as complete.
