Marion Harland was the pen name of Mary Virginia Terhune, one of the most prolific domestic writers of the Victorian era. The book is written in her characteristically warm and conversational style, with each chapter opening with a personal chat before moving into the recipes and practical guidance. This copy is missing pages 455 through 458 of the index only. Both endpapers are covered in glued-down newspaper recipe clippings from a previous owner. Bound in green cloth with black titles to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. A recipe is tucked into page 171. Very good condition. Binding shows heavy shelf wear with a chunk missing from the tail cap, and bumped and rubbed corners. Interior has light foxing and toning throughout, and some damp stains, otherwise a clean copy.
