Item description from seller

Collation (as in this copy): A⁸ (A1 cancelled, A2 imprimatur wanting), B–P⁸ (P8 torn and repaired).  Pagination: [14], 232 pp. (lacking the first two preliminary leaves). First edition. With early manuscript ownership inscriptions (Judith Dyson; James Radford) and Foxe Pointe Library Collection label. Printed in the year following Cotton’s death; one of the earliest posthumous publications of his biblical exegesis. Description A Brief Exposition with Practical Observations Upon the whole Book of Canticles is a significant and rare work by John Cotton, the most influential theologian of early Puritan New England and one of the principal architects of Congregationalism in America. Published in London in 1655, three years after Cotton’s death, this first edition presents his spiritual exposition of the Song of Songs, one of the most allegorical and theologically charged books of Scripture. Cotton interprets the Canticles as a sustained dialogue between Christ and the Church, weaving doctrinal exposition with searching pastoral application. His reading reflects the mature transatlantic Puritan tradition, combining English scholastic method with the experiential piety that shaped the religious culture of colonial Massachusetts. The work stands alongside Cotton’s better-known ecclesiological and covenantal writings as a testament to his breadth as a biblical expositor. Printed by T. R. and E. M. for Ralph Smith, the volume belongs to the small group of posthumous publications that carried Cotton’s influence back to England at the height of the Interregnum. Preserved with early provenance and bearing the marks of heavy devotional use, this copy is a vivid survival of the intellectual traffic between Old and New England and a rare witness to the spiritual foundations of early American Puritanism. John Cotton was the pre-eminent theologian of early New England and one of the most influential figures in the formation of American Puritanism. Born in Derby in 1585 and educated at Trinity College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he became minister of St Botolph’s Church, Boston (Lincolnshire), where his preaching drew large congregations and increasing suspicion from ecclesiastical authorities. A convinced Puritan, Cotton abandoned the liturgy and ceremonial practices of the Church of England and in 1633 emigrated to Massachusetts Bay, becoming teacher of the First Church of Boston. There he emerged as the intellectual leader of the colony, shaping its ecclesiology, covenant theology, and civil-religious settlement. His influence extended across the Atlantic through an extensive correspondence and a stream of printed works. Cotton may have contributed to the preparation of the Bay Psalm Book, the first book printed in British North America, and his descendants included his famous grandson Cotton Mather. Revered by contemporaries for his learning and pastoral wisdom, Cotton remains a central figure in the transatlantic history of Puritan theology and early American religious culture.
