A propos de cet article

Sm 8vo (7.75" x 5.25"), yellow and black printed wrappers. 48 pp. Author presentation inscription in ink at title. CONDITION: Good, some wear and creasing to covers, pencil doodle on front cover, rust staining around staples, contents very good. First separate edition. Inscribed by the Wright thus: "To Willard & Marie As ever, with all our very best Dick & Ella 5/5/41." Wright's tragic novella about resistance, betrayal, and sacrifice in the Jim Crow South, following Sue, a Black mother who risks everything to protect her son Johnny-Boy, a Communist Party organizer fighting for racial and economic equality. The work originally appeared in the literary magazine New Masses in 1938, and was included in a 1940 expanded edition of Wright's Uncle Tom's Children. It opens with a letter by Wright to International Publishers supporting the release of convicted CPUSA leader Earl Browder, followed by a brief foreword by James W. Ford. Willard Maas and his wife Marie Menken, were prominent (and somewhat notorious) figures on the New York avant-garde art scene and friends of Wright. Maas was a poet, filmmaker, and professor, while Menken was a painter and well-regarded experimental filmmaker. The couple married in 1937 and became artistic collaborators and celebrated hosts, though their volatile relationship often exposed their prominent guests to alcohol-fueled arguments in their Brooklyn apartment. Andy Warhol described Maas as "the last of the great bohemians," and Edward Albee cited the pair as an inspiration for the married couple in his play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962). Richard Wright (1908-1960) is best known for his novel Native Son (1940) and autobiographical memoir Black Boy (1945). Born in rural Mississippi and scarred by early experiences with racism, Wright found his voice as a writer and Communist Party organizer in Chicago, becoming the most influential African American writer of the 1940s. From 1946 until his death, he lived and worked in Paris. In his novels, short stories, and other writings, Wright rejected sanitized narratives in favor of laying bare the unvarnished reality of racial oppression in the United States.
