A propos de cet article

This is a full set of eight issues of The British Gazette, which ran for eight issues between 5 May and 13 May 1926 (excluding Sunday 9 May). The British General Strike of 1926 began on May 4 of that year and presented a major national crisis. By some estimates, 1.5 to 1.75 million workers were involved. On May 5, the British government struck back using its resident master wordsmith and orator, Winston Churchill, who was then serving in the British Cabinet as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Churchill was put in charge of a major propaganda effort. Under his editorship, the government made its case through the short-lived but highly effective newspaper series called The British Gazette. According to Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen, "Although Churchill did not actually write an article in every one of the eight issues, he played a major role in the mounting of the enterprise, the solicitation of personnel to publish the newspaper and paper on which to print it, as well as the editorial guidance of its content. The articles he wrote are all unsigned." Churchill’s official biographer, Sir Martin Gilbert, attributed to Churchill at least six articles, and suggested that Churchill may have had a hand in still other pieces. The influence of the publication was clearly significant, circulation well exceeding two million by the final issue. The short publication run ended when the strike was abandoned. Here is a complete set of the original eight issues. Each issue was a broadsheet newspaper of four pages, the first two issues printed on one side of the sheet only. Each issue measures 23.25 inches x 17.75 inches (59.1 x 45.1 cm). As might be expected, these newsprint issues are typically found significantly toned and frayed. This set is in considerably better condition than typical, very good overall, particularly given the age and inherent fragility of the issues. All eight issues show the usual creases from being folded in four, as well as some age toning and occasional spotting. The set is housed in a red cloth solander case lined with fine paper. The case is mottled, worn, and generally unsightly, but has done its job, protecting the issues within.Reference: Cohen C307, Woods Appendix III.…
