Illustrated with a total of four plates: two bright, hand-colored frontipieces, one additional hand-colored engraving, and one hand-colored map showing the Transmississippi West from the 42nd to the 32nd parallels. NOTE: Everything -- color frontispieces ,black and white title page, Table of Contents -- up to the map and the Introduction ("Guide to The Golden Land"), are MOUNTED. Lacks rear blank(s). Contemporary, reddish-brown stamped cloth boards rebacked with portion of original spine laid down. Boards are blind-stamped in elaborate floral design. Gilt title and blind-stamped bandlines to spine. Ex-library with (handwritten gilt) number to base of spine; no other library marks. Rubbing to boards. Corners showing. Howes F178. Sabin 9973. One of the colored frontispieces, resembling a title page, is titled: THE EMIGRANT'S GUIDE TO THE GOLDEN LAND, SHEWING HIM WHEN TO GO, WHERE TO GO, HOW TO GO. The hand-colored engravings are titled: Emigrant Party on the Road to California; Scene on a Branch of the Sacramento; and Encampment in the Valley of the Sacramento.
