A propos de cet article

BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo, x, 413 pgs., index. Original decorative, embossed brown cloth with gilt design on cover and gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor rubbing to edges and spine ends; spine faded; gilt bright on cover. Interior has contemporary inked name on front endpaper, else pages are age-toned but clean and tight. Quite a nice copy for its post-war vintage. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 13th Pennsylvania Infantry, a three-month regiment, was re-organized into the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry in August 1861. The 102nd was attached to the Army of the Potomac, and later to the Army of the Shenandoah late in the war. The 102nd fought in all the major, and many minor engagements in the Eastern Theater. Pennsylvania Infantry mustered out of service June 28, 1865. The 102nd Pennsylvania is identified as a FOX 300 Fighting Regiment. This work is a first-hand account of the experiences of Reverend Alexander M. Stewart, who served as Chaplain of the 102nd Regiment, P.V. during the Civil War. The memoir chronicles his firsthand experiences with the Army of the Potomac, including his observations of battles such as Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Stewart also writes about his interactions with soldiers, officers, and other chaplains, as well as his efforts to provide spiritual guidance and support to those under his care. Published in 1865, the book offers a unique perspective on the war from a chaplains point of view. Quite scare and not often offered for sale; RareBook Hub notes one copy sold since 1917. REFERENCE: DORN PA #119; COULTER 435 "This collection of contemporary war sketches appeared originally in an undesignated newspaper (probably the Pittsburgh Chronicle). He was much interested in the country, the natives, the historical spots, and the old mansions He gave particular attention to Charlestown and its John Brown associations, Warrenton, Aquia Creek, Williamsburg, Yorktown and some communities in Maryland."; NEVINS I pg. 163:"A composite of individual studies that originally appeared in a Pittsburgh newspaper; the author was chaplain of the 13th Pennsylvania and served in Virginia.".…
