The Binding is full black cloth, color uniform throughout, with the title debossed on the front board, bright gilt title, etc., to the spine, unmarked, white endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. The Dust Jacket is bright, colors uniform throughout, and would be intact but for one hard to see tear to the back panel that is closed from behind with archival, pH neutral materials, with wear to the head of the spine. The story presents a history, for future students, of the planet Shikasta (called Earth by its inhabitants) under the influence of three galactic empires, Canopus, Sirius, and their mutual enemy, Puttiora, presented as a series of reports from emissaries detailing the Century of Destruction and the Apocalypse (i.e. World War III). Mystic Sufi influences are present. The word Shikasta comes from Persian language, meaning "broken".
