Item description from seller

First edition. Quarto. Inscribed to noted bookseller Jim Curry. Laid in is Peoples? card as United States Marshall. Cloth, x, 201 pp., introduction, preface, illustrated, acknowledgments, references, index. The back of the dust jacket shows all of Peoples? badges from Deputy Sheriff to United States Marshall. The story of a man dedicated to law enforcement and a unique biography because it is the first full scale presentation of a modern Texas Ranger, written mainly from source documents. Peoples began his law enforcement career in 1926 as a deputy constable in Montgomery County. Lying about his age, he became a deputy sheriff in 1929. Oil was discovered about this time, and the rough and tumble times of the county?s oil fields and boom towns formed the foundation for Peoples? training. He joined the Rangers as a Private and moved up the ranks to Senior Captain in 1969 before retiring in 1974. That same year Peoples was appointed U. S. Marshal for the Northern District of Texas by Richard M. Nixon. He worked on a variety of cases including those involving Billy Sol Estes, the Maceo brothers gambling organization in Galveston, the La Grange Chicken Ranch, and George Parr, the ?Duke of Duval.? Written largely from primary sources, the author gives us not only the definitive work of an important Texas Ranger but also provides the first full scale study of the modern-day Rangers. A valuable contribution. Fine bright copy in dust jacket with 1/2" closed tear to top edge of front dust jacket.
