Item description from seller

London, printed for W.Smith, 1803. First edition. Octavo. (viii), 8pp, [2], 440pp. Illustrated with 85 (of 87) numbered engraved plates, 16 of which are folding. The title page calls for 88 plates but all copies of this work lack Plate 78. Additionally, this copy lacks plates 16 and 52, with the latter substituted by a duplicate of plate 46. A hugely detailed and lavishly illustrated reference work on all aspects of cabinet making and the decoration of fine furniture, set out as a dictionary of terms employed in the relevant trades. This is followed by treatises on geometry and perspective drawing followed by another on decorative painting as applied to furniture, interiors and murals. The final few pages contain a list of all of the master cabinet makers, upholsterers and chair makers working in London in 1803. The plates illustrate a wide range of items and subjects covered within the main text and the list of plates at the front of the text references the specific places within the dictionary that the text to accompany each plate can be found. The majority of the plates illustrate items of fine furniture including beds, chairs, mirrors, bookcases, tables and cabinets whilst other plates illustrate architectural details and detailing on furniture. The final 8 plates illustrate geometry and perspective drawing, the latter represented on four very large folding plates. Overall, a fascinating overview of Regency-era furniture making and interior design. Bound in near contemporary half calf with marble paper sides and gilt lettering to the spine. Moderate wear to the edges and sides of the covers. Most plates affected by a light water stain to the upper third of the plate. A few plates chipped at their foredges. One plate torn (with no loss) with the tear extending into the image. Another plate with a closed tear extending into the image. Some of the final folding plates reinforced on their versos where they have sustained tears at their folds. Lacking two plates as noted above. Overall, a sound and reasonably clean copy with the binding in good condition, priced to reflect the fact that this copy lacks two plates. Further photographs are available on request. NB The price of this item is variable dependent on your chosen payment method. Please feel free to make contact for further information and to request additional photographs of this item or to discuss payment options. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description de la boutique

I sell a small but diverse selection of mainly non-fiction antiquarian books online via ABE and also on Ebay under the trading name of N1.Books-and-Photographs. I tend to specialise in illustrated books, books on history, architecture, the applied arts, crafts and sciences but there are usually a few titles amongst my stock that stray into other fields. I am also a trained, working book restorer with over 30 years experience and am happy to quote on any book restoration project. You can see many examples of my work at www.sussexbookrestoration.co.uk and you are welcome to contact me via the link at that website should you have a book that may be in need of restoration or repair.
