Very good condition oversized (folio, 12 inches tall) illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Acknowledgments; Prologue; Manuscript of: :The Military Career of a Missourian"; Epilogue; and Documents and Photographs. Illustrated with facscimile Truman manuscrpt and black-and-white photographs. Photographs are from the still picture collection in the Harry S. Truman Library, from the U.S. Signal Corps photographs in the custody of the National Archives, and from the private collection of HJT. "From time to time, over the years, Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States, was wont to take pen in hand and reminisce on paper about one or another of the many phases of his long and eventful career. These brief autobiographical accounts were never reproduced or published. Written perhaps to fill some inner need, they were promptly filed away and, in most instances, soon forgotten. One such document is entitled "The Military Career of a Missourian". It is an account of Mr. Truman's service as a citizen soldier from the time he joined the Missouri National Guard in 1905 through the early weeks of his combat experience in World War I. The account ends abruptly on September 27, 1918, when the 129th Field Artillery in which Captain Truman served was engaged in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Mr. Truman gives no indication why he broke off his narrative at this point. It may well be that with the press of more immediated business at hand, he set the account aside, intending to finish it at some future date but never finding the time to do so. In any case, the manuscript was filed with President Truman's other papers, and only came to light some time after Mr. Truman's passing. "The Military Career of a Missourian" is paft of President Truman's Senatorial files which date from 1935 to 1944 and which are now in the custody of the Truman Library. While the document is undated, internal evidence suggests that it was written during President Truman's first term as Senator. The thirty-four page account, entirely in President Truman's handwriting, is reproduced here in full as it was written. The reader will note an occasional misspelled word. Orthography was never one of Mr. Truman's strong points. However, the document is clearly written in storng, forthright language, reflecting President Truman's thorough grounding in grammar and syntax. Its accuracy insofar as date, place, and time are concerned gives evidence to his legendary reputation for having a phenomenal memory. It should be noted that President Truman always felt his experiences in the military had a profound influence in shaping his subsequent career.
