A propos de cet article

First Edition. 1842.The auction catalogue for the sale of contents of Strawberry Hill, home of Horace Walpole. Quarto. pp.250. Very attractively presented in custom made grey card slip case with red leather spine label printed in gilt and protected by matching grey dust-jacket. This copy accords with Merritt's* Issue III (see Note 3 below). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Horace Walpole after Eckhardt. In original printed card covers rebacked in black cloth. With name on title page of John Bailey Langhorne, of Outwood Hall Wakefield(1816-1877), proprietor of the Newcastle Chronicle, who was appointed Master Extraordinary in the High Court of Chancery in 1840. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The catalogue has been used and well read, but is in very good condition for its age. The front and back boards are worn and creased, slightly soiled and have areas of loss at the corners. Front board has a small closed tear at the margin. Frontispiece has small area of loss at top corner. Title page has approx 1 sq. inch loss at lower corner. Pages are generally fresh and unmarked, apart from annotations on page 123, lot 159, ( in ink) with the initials of the buyer, and on Day 23 pp 233-235 ( in pencil) with the prices fetched for 'The Furniture and Valuables of the Long Gallery'. Note 1: Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham was the home of Horace (Horatio) Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, (1717-1797), a treasure house containing one of the most important collections of paintings, artifacts and furniture of the 18th century. Horace, son of British Prime MInister Hugh Walpole, was an English politician, man of letters, author of the bestselling Gothic novel 'The Castle of Otranto' and renowned antiquarian. Note 2: The sale which began on April 25th, 1842, was planned to continue over 24 days, however the catalogue , prepared by the auctioneer George Robins, went through a number of alterations and revisions and is believed to have been issued in as many as 7 successive versions. In particular, a decision was made to sell a number of the prints, drawings and illustrated manuscripts at a separate sale, rather than on Days 6 and 7 as originally planned.Later copies omit Days 6 and 7. Note 3: This copy contains the lots for days 6 and 7, and accords with Merritt's issue III.i.e. The last lot on page 73 is numbered 29 in error, instead of 26; p.130 lacks the 'Miscellaneous" heading; the text on pages 186 and 187 is transposed, with the last lots on day 18 in place of the first lots on day 19 and vice versa. Page 68 blank. *An account of descriptive catalogues of Strawberry Hill and of Strawberry Hill sale catalogues, together with a bibliography. Percival Merritt, Montague Press 1915.…
