CHAGALL, Marc; LASSAIGNE, Jacques. The Ceiling of the Paris Opera. Sketches, Drawings and Paintings. New York, Washington, London: Frederick A. Praeger, 1966. First English-language Edition, First Printing. Folio. 85, [5] pp. Original red pictorial cloth in the original dust jacket. Text by Jacques Lassaigne, translated by Brenda Gilchrist. With the original color lithograph frontispiece by Marc Chagall, six additional color lithographs after Chagall by Charles Sorlier, numerous color and black-and-white illustrations, and the large folding “Final Study” retained in the rear cover pocket. Published to document Chagall’s commission for the ceiling of the Paris Opera, undertaken at the invitation of André Malraux and unveiled in 1964. The volume traces the evolution of the project from preliminary sketches and studies through the completed ceiling, one of Chagall’s major late public commissions and a celebrated modern intervention within the historic Palais Garnier. Contents clean and unmarked. Binding remains sound and square; pictorial cloth bright and attractive. Dust jacket Very Good, with minor edge wear. A Near Fine complete copy retaining the original lithograph frontispiece, the six additional color lithographs, and the folding Final Study, the latter frequently absent from copies offered for sale. References: Mourlot 434; Sorlier 88. [Attributes: First Edition; First Printing; Hard Cover; Illustrated; In Dust Jacket.].…
