A propos de cet article

First Edition. Hardcover. 9 1.2" X 6 1/4". xv, 407pp. First edition with full number line indicating first printing. Mild rubbing and shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Sunning to spine. Bound in blue cloth over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Occasional inked underlining and notation to pages. Binding is firm and sound. An attractive 1978 first edition. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The Celebration of Heroes: Prestige as a Social Control System explores the profound influence of prestige on social behavior, presenting it as a central mechanism of social control that transcends cultures and eras. This groundbreaking treatise delves into how prestige-rooted in the universal human need for respect and esteem-shapes individual and group interactions. By drawing on historical examples, field studies, and experimental research, the book outlines empirically grounded propositions that illuminate the ways prestige influences rewards, punishments, and the distribution of social roles. From the structured allocation of honors to the complex dynamics of prestige subversion, the author examines how these processes affect social cohesion, organizational behavior, and perceptions of justice. At its core, the book investigates critical questions about the nature and impact of prestige: how it is distributed, manipulated, and institutionalized to guide behavior and sustain power structures. It considers the interplay between personal ambition and societal expectations, analyzing both the ethical implications of prestige systems and their practical applications in shaping norms. By integrating exchange theory and equity concepts, the study offers a nuanced perspective on the motivations behind human interactions, shedding light on the enduring tension between individual self-interest and collective values. The Celebration of Heroes serves as an essential resource for understanding the enduring role of esteem in human societies, while also challenging readers to reflect on the fairness and dynamics of prestige-driven social structures. Description de la boutique

Underground Books, ABAA is an online rare and antiquarian bookshop, founded in 2011 as a brick and mortar general bookstore of the same name in downtown Carrollton, Georgia, which is now operated by out former store manager as The Underground Bookshop. Co-owners Josh Niesse and Megan Bell met in 2011, just 10 days or so after Josh opened the doors of Underground Books, literally underground, several steps below street level in a 100-year-old basement in our historic downtown. Megan, an English student at the University of West Georgia, walked in, fell down the rabbit hole, and never left! Reader, we married in May of 2014, under the book arch that now resides at the bookshop. We are both proud alumni of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS), and Megan additionally of Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and of the ABAA Women’s Initiative Mentorship Program. Like many booksellers with open brick-and-mortar stores, we are passionate generalists, but our specialties are in decorative publisher's cloth bindings; fairy tales, folklore, and mythology; popular science and natural history; the occult; and fine press books.…
