A propos de cet article

First edition, early reprint. Hardcover, publisher's distinctive woven cloth boards in yellow with green and orange geometric patterning, an uncommon and visually striking binding. A curated collection of 200 recipes - 100 Ceylonese and 100 international - reflecting mid-20th-century Sri Lankan domestic cuisine alongside colonial and global culinary influences. The text includes traditional preparations such as sambals, curries, coconut-based dishes, and desserts, with introductory notes on meal structure and ingredient preparation. Notably, the acknowledgements reference diplomats and international contributors, underscoring the book's cultural and diplomatic context. Condition: Very Good. Boards remain bright and clean with minor rubbing and light edge wear; binding firm. No fabric tears or fraying. Interior is clean and unmarked throughout with light, even toning. Faint ghosting of perhaps a sticker on the rear interior board. A small, closed tear is present at the upper-right corner of page 180 (index leaf), as shown; otherwise no markings, inscriptions, or damage. A well-preserved example, particularly given the fragile textile binding. First edition (1959), with stated August 1959 reprint. Early issue of a scarce Sri Lankan community cookbook produced by The Colombo Apothecaries' Company, known for publishing domestic guides and household manuals during the mid-20th century. This volume represents a collaborative culinary effort rather than a single-author work, drawing on contributions from members of the Ceylonese community and international figures. Such cookbooks served both as practical household guides and as cultural documents, preserving regional recipes while reflecting the global connections of post-independence Sri Lanka. The Colombo Apothecaries' Company Ltd., founded in Colombo in 1883 by J. Smith Finlay and W. M. Smith, began as a modest chemist shop but rapidly expanded into one of Ceylon's mercantile enterprises. Strategically located in central Colombo - near York and Prince Streets, at the hub of British colonial trade routes - the company was deeply embedded in the island's role as a key Indian Ocean port linking Europe, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Over time it evolved into a major department store, photographic exporter, and printing/publishing house, supplying goods and cultural materials to both local and international markets. Active from the late 19th century into at least the mid-20th century, it functioned as both a commercial powerhouse and a cultural intermediary, producing works such as cookbooks and guides that reflected Ceylon's domestic life to the Western world while also reinforcing its global trade and diplomatic connections.…
