A propos de cet article

[viii] ff, 237, [xi] pp. Engraved frontis, portrait of Kircher, all 25 of the plates called for in the Index Figurarum including 2 folding maps and 3 folding plates, 63 copper engraved text cuts. Large folio (14.75") in contemporary leather boards, 6 raised bands, decorated floral gilt in the compartments. This is the large, lavishly illustrated true first edition of Kircher's monumental work on China, including history, flora, fauna and natural sciences, culture and customs, religion, language and writing systems. At age 28, Kircher had applied to go to China as a missionary himself but was refused entry by the Chinese government. Instead, over the next 37 years "he maintained a voluminous correspondence with fellow Jesuits in China, gleaning all the information he could from their letters and journals." (Merrill, 20) Those men were not lowly parish priests, but the Chief of the Bureau of Mathematics and Astronomy in Beijing; a mathematician at the Chinese royal court who was the author of the first detailed geography of China; as well as Michael de Boym who would publish a detailed work on the flora and fauna of China. Kircher also relied on Matteo Ricci's Chinese "Commentaries" as well as Heinrich Roth's scholarly work on Sanskrit. Using this wealth of first hand information, Kircher put together a beautiful, entertaining and informative work on China, including the first Chinese vocabulary ever printed, as well as a the first printing of a Sanskrit grammar and the Devangari script in Europe. (Merrill). The folding maps include Korea, Formosa, Laos and Japan, and the magnificent plates include the Nestorian stele, engraved in 781 by the first Christian missionaries to China, with the Chinese and Syriac texts printed here for the first time. Depictions of the people, their costumes and buildings, along with beautiful illustrations of flowers, plants and animals, give a fantastically rich image of China, one that would be part of European learning until the 19th century. Kircher, of course, couldn't leave well enough alone: his eminently useful study of the Chinese language was accompanied by his extensively developed theory that Chinese was related to Egyptian based on the idea that the Biblical Ham migrated from Egypt to China. Kircher's theories were often wrong, but they were wrong with flair! And beautifully illustrated. The book is in very good antiquarian condition. Leather covers are a bit worn and scuffed, hinges are cracking but the sewing is holding strong, spine endcaps gone. Interior renewed endpapers are darkened, title and frontis have stamps from Holsteinborg Castle library, some evidence of strengthening at the gutter at the beginning of the book, a few short marginal tears, occasional light foxing, the two alphabetical plates before 163 have repaired clean tears, Ee2-Ee3 are pulling away from the binding at the bottom, the last few leaves are browned at the edges, otherwise a very nice copy of this magnificent and beautifully illustrated look at China by the irrepressible Kircher.
