Francis Kalnay's 1958 juvenile novel follows twelve-year-old Pedro and his gaucho mentor Juan as they find and gentle a spirited wild pony on a great cattle estancia. Conflict arrives when the wealthy ranch owner claims the horse for his own son, and Pedro and Juan set out to protect the animal while confronting rigid social divides. Gaucho folklore, estancia custom, and South American equestrian tradition run through the narrative. Harcourt, Brace published the book in New York in 1958. Julian de Miskey, the Hungarian-American artist and longtime New Yorker contributor, provided black-and-white line illustrations and a two-page title spread. National recognition followed publication: the 1958 New York Herald Tribune Children's Spring Book Festival Prize and a 1959 Newbery Honor. The copy carries documented Martha's Vineyard provenance from the Edward Davis Thayer Collection at the Edgartown Free Public Library. Thayer was a Massachusetts woolen manufacturer whose family kept a summer residence at Starbuck's Neck in Edgartown and endowed literary collections for the island community. A period bookseller ticket from Lauriat's of Boston and Chestnut Hill traces the volume's original retail distribution. Kalnay drew on firsthand experience living among gauchos on the Argentine pampas, and the novel is his most widely recognized work, valued for its cultural grounding and its mid-century illustration.
