A propos de cet article

50 issues. Each of between 16 and 32 pages. Bound in four black or burgundy coloured cloth covered volumes, lettered in gilt, with the illustrated wraps retained for each issue, chiefly out of necessity as, with the frugality one would expect from a publisher, they often form part of the pagination. The bindings are firm, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed and the extremities are bumped. The text blocks are slightly toned, marked, foxed and musty, with slight cracking at points and one issue in the final volume has some passages underlined in blue ink. The publisher's own retained copies, noted as such to the front endpaper of volume 3 in pencil. Presumed to be a complete run of the house magazine, which was developed from a WW2 newsletter, and issued twice a year. It was well-produced, even in the immediate post-war years, with photographic illustrations throughout, a lively mixture of detailed house news, views and articles, relating to the practicalities, processes and challenges of all aspects of book publishing, marketing and manufacture, as well as the wider exploits of employees. The early issues contain interviews with demobilised servicemen and women returning from war work, regarding their wartime experiences, also with photographs and details of the damage caused to London publishing houses by air raids. In later issues significant historical events filter in, for instance the assassination of John F. Kennedy is marked by a short tribute and an extract from a speech that he made on the art of printing, as is the moon landing at the end of the same decade, with much mention of the lunar fiction of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. There are several articles on Dylan Thomas and Eric Gill, and Robert Gibbings contributes an article. Throughout the 1950s the majority of the covers feature black and white photograph illustrations, whereas in the 1940s there are two covers by the illustrator Antony Lake, and the majority of the 1960s covers feature graphic illustrations from Dent publications, including three by Val Biro. A rare periodical, not for general circulation, giving remarkably detailed insight into a turbulent period of British publishing in the 25 years following the Second World War.…
