On February 9, 1863, Hamilton was appointed medical inspector of the United States Army, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. About Paul Eve's book: "This volume . . . presents unusual surgical problems grouped according to various divisions of the human body. . . . Among the 'remarkable' cases are blindness from worms in the eye (pages 121-22) and an amputation of the head with the patient surviving thirty-six hours (pages 758-59). There is an extensive index of cases at the conclusion of the volume. This book provides some of the most enjoyable and entertaining reading to be found in any nineteenth-century American surgical text" (Rutkow, The History of Surgery in the United States, Vol. I, GS41).…
