A propos de cet article
31.5 x 25cm. Three hardcovers in paper-covered boards with vellum spines: (Vol. 1-2) 238pp, 234pp; (Vol. 3-4) 242pp, 228pp; (Vol. 5-6) 220pp, 156pp. Bound with covers. Lavish art journal exploiting the colour mass-printing technologies of the 20th century. Comparable to the German modern art magazine 'Jugend' in quality and scope. Later subtitled "The Most Fascinating Magazine in the World", Colour's first six volumes provide a snapshot of modern artistic trajectories disrupted by the outbreak of World War I. Vibrant images accompany prose, essays, poems, and reviews, some directly addressing the war. Shorter regular columns also cover developments in music, interior design, and photography (the latter covered by E.O. Hoppe, Alvin Langdon Coburn, et al). Some issues are bound without the rear adverts affecting at least one article which overruns (e.g. Guy Rothery's 'Futurism in Furnishing' in Volume 4 is "continued on page xiv" which is absent). The roster of writers feature many whose specialities covered mystery genres, folklore, myths, and the esoteric, such as E. C. Vivian [i.e. Charles Henry Cannell], Lewis Spence, F. Hadland Davis, J.-H. Rosny, Arthur Applin, Louis Zangwill, Regina Miriam Bloch, Elliott O'Donnell and his sister Petronella O'Donnell (who contributes poetry), etc. and a mix established, cultish and obscurer/pseudonymous writers including Hugh Pollard [i.e. Major Hugh Bertie Campbell Pollard], Bart Kennedy, Sylvia Lynd, W. Teignmouth Shore, Claude Houghton, Alfred de Sauveniere, Maxwell Armfield, Rowan Orme [i.e. O. Rowan-Hamilton], Gerald Hamilton, Hugh E. Wright, Huntley Carter, Joseph Leftwich, Yone Noguchi, Vere Stuart Menteth Hutchinson, Katharine Nixey (who supplies 'The Vampire in Myth and Legend' illustrated by Austin Osman Spare, among other items), etc. The volumes feature the artworks of George Clausen, Augustus John, Austin Osman Spare, John Hassall, Joseph Simpson, Jarrow Jones, W. Lipczinski, Lee Hankey, Horace Taylor, Louis Sargent, William Strang, John Duncan Fergusson, Horace Brodzky, Edmond Xavier Kapp, William Orpen, Horace Taylor, Frank Brangwyn, William Lee Hankey, Blamire Young, Emile Antoine Verpilleux, Anne Louise Falkner, Sydney Herbert Paviere, Ignacio Zuloaga, Louis Augustus Sargent, Gerald Moira, Arnesby Brown, Byam Shaw, Glyn Philpot, Ethel Wright, Philip Connard, Thomas Derrick, George Owen Wynne Apperley, Sydney Litten, John Nash, Victoria Monkhouse, Mark Gertler, Carlo Norway, Nina Hammett, Kate Carew, Vera Willoughby, Ivy de Verley, Reginald Higgins, William Bruce Ellis Ranken, Raymond McIntyre, Charles Ricketts, Adrian Allinson, Walter Bayes, Elijah Albert Cox, Douglas Fox Pitt, James Hamilton Hay, Alfred Wolmark, Princesse Marie Eristoff-Kasak, Firmin Baes, Justine Kong Sing, F Gregory Brown, Malcolm Drummond, Moffat Peter Lindner, J.
