Item description from seller

22 cm. 363 pages. Map, footnotes, index. DJ has general wear and tear. About the author: James Pinckney Harrison was an American scholar, author, and military veteran who specialized in East Asian history and modern political conflicts. Before establishing his academic career, he served as a pilot in the United States Air Force. He went on to pursue advanced academic training at Columbia University, where he worked as a Preceptor of Oriental Studies and conducted deep research through the university's Weatherhead East Asian Institute. Harrison later joined the faculty at Hunter College of the City University of New York, serving for many years as a dedicated Professor of History. Throughout his career, his research focused heavily on how ideological shifts and warfare transformed Asian societies, resulting in prominent historical texts such as The Long March to Power, The Endless War: Fifty Years of Struggle in Vietnam, and The Communists and Chinese Peasant Rebellions. The Communists and Chinese Peasant Rebellions: A Study in the Rewriting of Chinese History explores the complex relationship between the rise of Chinese Communism and China's long, native legacy of rural uprisings. Author James P. Harrison argues that traditional Chinese thought inherently conflicts with Marxist-Leninist ideology, which strictly emphasizes class struggle and societal friction. Because China lacked a massive, modern urban proletariat or a traditional Western bourgeois revolution, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) selectively looked backward to voluminous historical records of peasant unrest. Through this academic deconstruction, the text demonstrates how CCP historians systematically reinterpreted ancient dynastic revolts-transforming them into early, proto-revolutionary instances of lower-class resistance against oppressive feudal landlords. Ultimately, Harrison provides a detailed look at political historiography, revealing how the CCP actively rewrote national history to build an ideological lineage, validate Mao Zedong's peasant-centric strategies, and legitimize their own path to power. First Edition [stated], Presumed First Printing.
