The Contemplative Man's Recreation; Being a Discourse of Rivers, Fishponds, Fish and Fishing not unworthy the Perusal of most Anglers. From copyright: The Publishers acknowledge Messrs. John Lane the Bodley Head in permitting use of their edition first published in 1897. The text is from the fifth edition of 1676, the last to be revised by the author, but the spelling is mondernized. This reprint first publishing 1931 by George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. Oversize 8" x 10" design. Dark green full cloth boards, gilt stamped cover and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, bump, discoloration. Enchanting gilt illustrations of stylized titles, fish decoration at cover and spine. Thick heavy stock leaves, very good, clean. Dark green over lt. green monochromatic Illustrated endpapers; whimsical silhouette of an angler adding his catch to net and stirring his stew. Gilded top edge. Includes letter to John Offley from Izaak Walton, and note by the author to reader. Twelve, beautiful color plates by Arthur Rackham w/captioned tissues intact. Also, twenty-five charming black and white illustrations, decoration, throughout. Bind fine; hinges intact. "He that hopes to be a good Angler must not only bring an inquiring, searching, observing wit," suggests the master, but he must bring a large measure of hope and patience.
