The first edition.In the publisher's original cloth.Illustrated by the author with a full colour frontispiece, monochrome vignettes and 31 colour plates. Collated complete.This work was written by English zoological artist, author and lepidopterist F. W. Frohawk. Frohawk wrote a number of works on butterflies, such as 'Natural History of British Butterflies' and this work. He was best known for his butterfly illustrations, which are now displayed at the Natural History Museum in London. This work features detailed descriptions of various species of butterfly, along with to-scale watercolour illustrations of each by Frohawk. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally excellent with only very light bumping to the extremities of the boards. Light offsetting to the pastedowns and the odd spot. Front hinge starting. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages with only light spotting to the rear blank. Very small minor tidemarks to the head of the frontispiece and title page and a tipped in newspaper clipping to the foreword with relevance to Rothschild, the author of the foreword.
