Complete with sixteen colour plates, and monochrome illustrations throughout. Publisher's red cloth, extremities rather bumped, the spine ends similarly bumped resulting in light losses, occasional scratches to spine and boards. Binding a little strained and shaken at the hinges. Pages with some light handling marks throughout and occasional spots, but generally appearing bright. Sienna full cloth boards, black cover and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, bump. Pages very good, no writing; attractively toned. Montage illustrated endpapers. Dynamically and wonderfully complex art deco style imagery by Joyce Mercer throughout. Includes sixteen color plates and over two hundred and fifty black and white drawings. Dust wrapper, moderate shelf wear, rub, chip; unclipped 10/6 net, protected in new clear sleeve. Rare wrapper features effusive montage of scenes in color at front panel wrapping around to spine. Back panel features pictorial adverts for: Wings of Speed; Let's Be Gay; and, Let's Be Absurd. At back flap, summary advert for George Wright's The Wandering Whipsnaders. Rare very good example in near very good original wrapper. From front flap summary: "The exquisite art of Miss Joyce Mercer has never found a more suitable medium than the illustration of these famous tales. Although children enjoy the stories in themselves, there is a great advantage in having them illuminated with the wit and understanding of Miss Mercer's imagination, for they enable the youthful mind to envisage with greater clarity the characters and incidents in the stories, and we do not doubt that this will be accepted as the edition of Andersen and Grimm."
