First editions of the complete set of the Algonquian Series, each volume one of 250 unnumbered copies, and each preserving its original plain jacket, very possibly the only such set in existence. "William Wallace Tooker once was widely recognized as one of his era's leading specialists in Coastal Algonquian culture, history and place names. A prolific writer, he published 12 books, some 50 pamphlets and over 100 articles between 1888 and 1911. During his life and for many years thereafter, nearly every scholar interested in one aspect or another of Coastal Algonquian life routinely consulted his work" (collection summary to the Cornell University William Wallace Tooker archive, accessible online). The Algonquian Series collected together his monographs on the origin of Native American place names, formerly published in journals in the 1890s. Tooker's studies, based on research into early documents, are still of value. 10 vols, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, edges uncut. With plain dust jackets, each spine panel with neat excision to show vol. numbers, likely as issued. Light sunning from volume number-holes in jackets, else fine copies, partly unopened, in excellent, well-preserved jackets, the front fold of the first volume partly split but holding, fifth volume with chip to spine panel, some light wear around the extremities with a few slightly larger chips.
