Published in 1966 as the inaugural volume of The Museum of Modern Art Papers on Architecture, the text provided a theoretical critique of rigid corporate Modernism, countering Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's minimalist maxim "less is more" with the assertion "less is a bore." Venturi advocated for historical pluralism, Mannerist ambiguity, and visual richness, incorporating formal analyses of classical, Renaissance, Baroque, and vernacular buildings alongside a foreword by architectural historian Vincent Scully. The volume was released simultaneously with a hardbound trade edition through a collaborative distribution between The Museum of Modern Art and Doubleday & Company. Interior pages integrate comparative black-and-white architectural photographs, section drawings, structural diagrams, and historic floor plans keyed directly to the surrounding critical discourse. Awarded the 1991 Pritzker Architecture Prize, Robert Venturi redirected late-twentieth-century design through his theoretical writings and collaborative building practice with Denise Scott Brown. His analysis in this inaugural monograph established a framework for context-sensitive urban design that influenced generations of practicing architects and academic theorists worldwide. The front flyleaf bears a signature believed to be that of American architect David Kahler, 1936 to 2026, longtime president of Kahler Slater and co-architect of the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion alongside Santiago Calatrava. Acquired from his estate in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the volume is an association copy documenting the adoption of Venturi's manifesto by leading mid-century American practitioners.
