Item description from seller

A smart first edition of this collection of essays on life from American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. First edition, first printing. In this volume, Emerson sets out to answer the question "How shall I live?" Composed of nine essays, each preceded by a poem, this work is largely based on lectures Emerson held throughout the country. Written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-nineteenth century. With publisher's advertisements to the rear, dated 1860. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with marks to the boards. Splits in the cloth to the extremities resulting in light fraying and light loss to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the endpapers. Bookseller's blind stamp to the front endpaper. Good.
