Item description from seller

A very good copy in new quarter leather binding with raised bands to spine and title label and gilt date, and marbled boards. Complete with 8 fold-out plates, and decorative head and tailpieces. A continuation of Robert Boyle's work on gases published in 1660. He was a significant experimental physicist, best known for the formulation of Boyle's Law in 1662. It is now known that this also drew on work by Richard Towneley and Henry Power who has been working on the study of gases from 1653. Their work was affected by Boyle's 1660 publication and they completed their experiment in 1661, forwarding their results to the Royal Society who passed it on to 'interested persons' including Boyle. Boyle credited Towneley with the discovery, but the published equation was Boyle's and became Boyle's Law. This work is an update on Boyle's continuing experimentation. [ref Webster, Nature Vol 197 Jan 1965]. Contents: title; preface 12pp; fold out plates I & II (II bound before I); advertisements 5pp leading into errata - which have an old cross-hatched ink crossing - out. They are still readable; half title to the 1st Part; text 1-176; half title to Notes; advertisement 2pp; text 181-198 Finis; contents 10pp; fold out plates III-VIII. The contents are very clean and in good order with light toning to page edges. There is a small repaired tear to the attachment to Plate I; a number of scholarly notes - mainly referencing figures on plates; a ragged bottom edge to p193; darkened and slightly nibbled top edge to Plate II; darkened top edge Plate VII; and slight nick to top edge Plate VIII. Old quarto size - 21 cm x 16.5 cm.

Description de la boutique

We are a small online bookselling business specialising in rare and unusual books, generally published before 1900, with a focus on natural history, history, illustrated works and some literature. We are based in the beautiful Orkney Islands and have a specialist Orkney/Shetland section in our listings. We run a bookshop in Orkney - Birsay Books - where we have a wide range of stock from science fiction and fantasy to maritime and, of course, Orkney/Shetland and Scottish material. We take images of all of our books to supplement the online descriptions, and are always happy to provide more on request. When you order from us, we ensure that books are properly packed to protect their condition and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for additional security. Because we are based on an island which depends on ferries and flights for shipping, we can not guarantee 'next day' delivery. We will simply get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can.
