Item description from seller

DICKENS, Charles (1812–1870); et al. Contributing Master Humphrey’s Clock. [In] Littell’s Spirit of the Magazines and Annuals, Vol. IV. Philadelphia: E. Littell & Co., 1840. First edition of this periodical volume, containing an early American periodical appearance of Dickens’s Master Humphrey’s Clock, published during its original British weekly serialization. Thick Octavo (8vo). Bound in publisher’s original dark blue cloth, with the spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Text printed in double columns. Contains nine selections from Master Humphrey’s Clock, including the opening Master Humphrey frame and substantial early portions of The Old Curiosity Shop. The serialization is incomplete in this volume. Master Humphrey’s Clock was Dickens’s weekly literary experiment and became the original vehicle for The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. This volume preserves Dickens’s work in a contemporary American periodical context, interspersed with selections from British magazines and literary annuals. Contains nine installments, including the opening Master Humphrey frame and substantial early portions of The Old Curiosity Shop. The serialization is not complete in this volume. Contents generally clean, with age-toning and scattered foxing. Binding remains sound and square, though the front hinge is starting. Cloth rubbed and soiled, with wear at extremities. Spine heavily rubbed, with chipping and loss at the head and tail. A Good copy of a scarce American periodical containing early Dickens material. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover.].
