In English. First Edition (SD, 1959, along with a separate Errata slip). So this book was previously owned by the research chemist Paul Haake. I purchased it along with a 1963 hardcover edition (same title) that was signed by the author, Thor Bak, and inscribed to Professor Haake. I have that book listed for sale as well. The book here for sale is not signed and Professor Haake did not write his name in the book. However, it is the first edition, and I believe the Only first edition for sale on the Internet. You can see the covers in the photos. They're in quite solid shape. There is no conspicuous soiling. There is a little crease off the top edge of the front just adjacent to the spine. It created a similarly shaped little crease in the same spot on a good number of the pages, far from the print. You can also see a little bit of it off the top edge of the spine. The spine is in solid shape. The black lettering on the spine is nicely bright as it is on the front cover. The middle edge of the rear cover has two bump/nicks (third photo). The higher one created a small superficial scratch along the middle page edge and a small and light crease on the pages just off their middle edges, far from the print. The binding of this softcover book is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean and nicely bright. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There are no other creases than the ones I just referred to. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'Thor Anders Bak was Danish chemist. He was professor of chemistry at the University of Copenhagen from 1963 to 1992, rector of the University of Copenhagen from 1972 to 1976 and chairman of the Danish Refugee Council from 1984 to 1989. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 1989 he received the HC Ørsted Medal in gold. In 1999 he became Commander of Dannebrog. His other books included Chemistry (1960), Mathematics for Scientists (1966), and A Dream of Science (1992). 'Paul Haake was a noted research chemist and educator. He received a graduate degree in chemistry from Harvard University. His doctoral research on hydrolysis and isotopic exchange involving esters of phosphoric acid was in the laboratory of Frank Westheimer. After postdoctoral work at the California Institute of Technology, he started his faculty career at UCLA. In 1968 he came to Wesleyan University where he was a beloved teacher, colleague and researcher for almost 40 years. With Max Tishler, he enthusiatically developed the doctorate program in chemistry at Wesleyan. His research on the kinetics and mechanism of chemical reactions, particularly reactions of biochemically-interesting phosphorus compounds, resulted in 100 scholarly articles and books, including Hydrolysis and Exchange in Esters of Phosphoric Acid", which has been cited 250 times since it was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. This was and is a seminal paper in phosphorus chemistry. In 1986, he was a founding member and major force behind the formation of Wesleyan's Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, which at the time was considered both controversial and forward looking. Professor Haake devoted much of his career to teaching and was very proud of the extremely popular series of courses he taught at Wesleyan for non-science majors including, "Molecular Basis of Social Problems," and "Biochemical Basis of Nutrition. In 1975 he was appointed by Governor Ella T. Grasso to Connecticut's Nuclear Power Evaluation Council. Many of the books I will be selling can accurately be described as ranging from somewhat rare to very rare. In some cases there won't be another copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. There doesn't seem much point, for you or me, in offering something that so many others are already offering. Subject matter will range very widely, creating the possibility for people with very different interests to find something that excites them. As regards pricing, my primary goal is to sell the book. Most often I would expect my book to be the least expensive option on the Internet taking into account an appropriate comparison(what is the condition, is the dust jacket present, is the book signed, is it a first printing, etc.). More important than selling the book I want to make sure that you know, as much as is possible, exactly what you are getting. To that end, you'll notice that my descriptions of condition tend to be lengthy, and that there will always be photographs to help you draw your own conclusions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about a given book. As regards international shipping, the first class or standard rates I charge are based on a package weight between 2 and 3 pounds. If the book is on the thin side there is a possibility that I can securely pack it up under 2 pounds in weight. If so, the shipping price will drop by around $11.00 or $12.00 to $26.00-27.00. Canada, which is less expensive drops to $18.00. You can contact me before purchasing a book for an estimate on the shipping cost.
