A propos de cet article
21 x 14cm. Hardcover with repaired dustjacket, xx + 234pp. Inscribed (in French) by Selden Rodman to Haitian artist Luce Turnier: "a Luce Turnier / hommage et affection de / Selden / Oakland, NJ, April 30/58". First edition. Cary Selden Rodman was the author of the first book published in America about Haitian art in 1948, 'Renaissance in Haiti' (covering artists including Hector Hyppolite and Philome Obin). He also later published 'Haiti: The Black Republic' in 1954. Selden lived in Haiti later in life, where he managed the 'Renaissance II' gallery. Seldon maintained lifelong interests in self-taught artists and also so-called 'outsiders'. 'Conversations with Artists' contains discussions with 35 American painters, sculptors and architects including Leonard Baskin, June Wayne, Alexander Calder, Herman Cherry, Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Franz Kline, Kenzo Okada, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, and many others. Heavily chipped jacket shows signs of Japanese tissue repairs, with large areas of loss, especially towards spine (protected in archival sleeve). Blank reverse of rear jacket flap has some addresses inked on. Internally bright and tight. A good condition example of a significant association copy.…
