An excellent example of the first edition of Ambrose Heath's work of quintessential pre-war British culinary writing, with a letter from the publisher tipped in. The first edition, first impression of this work, with clipped dust wrapper. With a loosely inserted letter from the Country Life publishing house tipped in to the front free endpaper, dated 1955. In the letter, M. Nicholson for Webster Evans, Editor of Country Life Books, answers a question from one Mr Scott regarding this work, and explains 'I am very sorry but we are unable to resolve your Eric Ravilious problem [.] if I could have consulted the original agreement, I could have found how many illustrations Ravilious was asked to do, but that is now impossible'.Organized by month, the book offers a seasonal approach to cooking, reflecting the rhythms of rural life and the availability of ingredients throughout the year. Heath's recipes are interspersed with practical advice and insights into kitchen gardening.Illustrated with vignette wood engravings by British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver Eric Ravilious.Bookplates of Stanley Scott to rear pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with clipped dust wrapper. Externally, exceptionally vibrant. Publisher's letter tipped in to front free endpaper. Bookplates to rear pastedown.
