Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. First Limited Edition. A very good set of the thesis on military architecture of the crusading kingdoms, submitted in 1910 the original title was "The influence of the Crusades on European military architecture - to the end of the XIIth Century" by T.E. Lawrence, together with a volume of his letters regarding his visits to castles as a young man. Includes folder with two maps again in bright clean condition. This was published shortly, in fact a year plus one day, after Lawrence's death in 1935 by arrangement with his brother A.W. Lawrence. Printed and published in Great Britain by Christopher Sandford, Francis J. Newbery, and Owen Rutter at the Golden Cockerel Press, 10 Staple Inn, London, and completed on the 20th May 1936. The edition is limited to 1000 numbered copies, printed in Perpetua type on British mould-made paper. Two volumes. Bound in 3/4 chestnut morocco binding (Sangorski & Sutcliffe), top edges brightly gilt. A very good set with only minoe marking to boards. Includes the two fold out maps in folder. Maps have no chips, no tears. Small neat bookplate of Bent Juel-Jensen in each volume. Medicine and bibliophily frequently go together, but never more so than in Bent Juel-Jensen, most anglophile of Danes, who came to live in Oxford and wrote many articles on bibliography. Altogether a nice bright set of this elusive Lawrence item. See, A History of the Golden Cockerel Press, Cave & Manson for further details regarding the publication. O'Brien A188. Whilst a set, Volume II was actually published two months after Volume 1. N° de réf. du vendeur 062229

ONE OF 1,000 SETS, printed on mould-made paper, 166 reproductions of drawings, photographs and diagrams, 2 maps printed in black and red within original faintly spotted envelope (laid in at rear of first volume), pp. [ii], 56; [iv], 60, crown 4to, original half brick-red morocco with cream cloth sides, the backstrips lettered in gilt between five raised bands, faint adhesive show-through to cloth at edges of morocco, t.e.g., others untrimmed and faintly toned, very good. A particularly good set. Lawrence's thesis for his Final Examination in History at Oxford, the result of numerous European trips, many made on a bicycle with a particularly high gear, custom-built by Morris of Oxford, and a journey to the East in the hot summer of 1909. Lawrence's contention, in opposition to contemporary thinking, was that many military architectural improvements of the era were developed in Europe and introduced by the Crusaders to the Near East. Published a year after Lawrence's death, with assistance from his brother, A.W. Lawrence, who contributes the Foreword to the first volume. (Chanticleer 112; O'Brien, 132).
