A propos de cet article

Presumed first printing of the first edition - no edition details or publishing date in the book, but paper used indicates early post-war. Author of "Scorpion's Suicide", "My Seed - Thy Harvest" etc. ***Near fine in cream cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. No fading. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine, with no ownership inscriptions. Printed on very thin paper, but no creases or tears. Pages clean. ***In a very good period illustrated dustwrapper, with fabulous period cover art, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 12/6 net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, with some loss at the top corner of the back panel, and slight loss at the top edge of the front panel. Edges of dustwrapper rubbed, creased and nicked, with a closed tear at the top edge of the back panel. Back panel of dustwrapper slightly discoloured and marked (white background). Spine of dustwrapper slightly marked and creased. Front panel illustration bright. ***176 pages. 210mm x 144mm. ***'This novel occupies, justifiably, the largest canvas Miss Dale has chosen yet. In the development of this ambitious theme the characters of both Eulalie Browne and her son Napier are subject to detailed analysis from Eulalie's cradle to Napier's and her own grave. The author has added a notable figure to her gallery of women. There is nothing superficial about this portrait. Each stage in the progress of this disastrous woman's life is told with great skill, conviction and with due regard to the other members of her family who are also well rounded and living people. ***But this is a grim book, necessarily. The author has set down in unsparing detail her analysis of some aspects of the Oedipus Complex. ***There are smiles - and a little laughter - but on a rising tide of relentless tragedy the book sweeps towards its tremendous climax. Here the destroyer Eulalie, faced upon the brink of death by the demands of cumulative conscience, stands spiritually bayed by the whole weight of her wrong doings. Her decline into drunkenness and the final scene in which she at last faces what she has become is very powerfully done. ***Once again Miss Dale postulates a theory - She says, "It is possible through a lifetime to evade the cold grey dawns of conscience up to the brink of life's ending. But I believe that when this is achieved the soul is impelled, at the moment of passing, to accept the whole weight of cumulative retribution. ***Deus quos vult perdere dementat prius. Whom God would destroy he first sends mad. ***"A first-rate novelist." [Western Morning News - quote and review quote from inside front and rear jacket blurb] ***An uncommon early post-war first edition, complete in its fragile and attractive dustwrapper, in very good condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
