A propos de cet article

SUBTITLED: Robert Stuart’s Narrative of His Overland Trip Eastward from Astoria in 1812-13. From the Original Manuscripts in the Collection of William Robertson Coe, Esq., to which is added: An Account of the Tonquin’s Voyage and of Events at Fort Astoria (1811-12) and Wilson Price Hunt’s Diary of his Overland Trip Westward to Astoria in 1811-12. Translated from Nouvelle Annales des Voyages, Paris, 1821, Edited by Philip Ashton Rollins. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Tall 8vo, cxxxvii, 391 pgs., frontis portrait, illustrations, 6 maps, bibliography, notes, appendices, index. Original red cloth with gilt titled leather label on spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Small amount of shelf rubbing and soiling; spine a bit rubbed. Interior with label of former owner on endpaper, and with unsigned inked inscription on front free endpaper; else interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Rollins here presents one of the very best books on the early fur trade and exploration of the American West and Pacific Northwest. He provides a fine biographical sketch of Robert Stuart and his family. This is the first English translation of Stuart’s journal and “Travelling Memoranda”. Very carefully edited, correcting many errors found in the Paris 1821 publication of some of the material; Rollins is able to locate the trek route of what was to become the wagon route to the Oregon of later years. Comprehensive, one of the best. This Scribner’s edition was issued with the black leather titled spine patch; the Eberstadt edition of the same year has a gilt titled cloth spine without the leather label. Both editions, using the same pages, were limited; the Eberstadt edition was done in about 300 copies; the Scribner’s edition in about 700 copies.
