Rather than keep pieces which we have selected with loving care to ourselves, we are delighted to share them with scholars and the general public by organising exhibitions and publishing catalogues. If Delights of Kutahya is of use to collectors, art historians and others interested in Ottoman Turkish art, and awakens interest among the younger generation, then we will be happy to have made our own contribution to appreciation of Kutahya pottery. Kutahya's large clay deposits have supplied potters since antiquity in a region ruled successively by Phrygians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. The city became a centre of Ottoman Turkish pottery manufacture around the same time as Iznik, and continued after the latter potteries went out of operation in the late 17th century. Court patronage of the potteries played a significant role in their development, and both Muslim and Christian craftsmen poured their skills and artistry into creating bowls, plates, cups, lemon squeezers, ewers, jugs, mugs, flasks, rosewater sprinklers, censers, hanging omaments, lamps, pen holders and many other artifacts of daily life. Tile production was a major part of the Kutahya potteries' output over the centuries, and in later times figurines were added to the range of items produced here. Designs and colours have varied widely from period to period. Today efforts are being made to preserve the traditional art of pottery making in Kutahya, and there are many individual artists and pottenes dedicated to keeping this art alive, their output ranging from a limited number of hand crafted pieces to large scale industrial productuion. One of the former is Sıtkı Olcar, who has been producing original designs at his workshop in Kutahya since 1973, and has made a distinctive contribution to this art. We sincerely thank Sıtkı Olcar and all the Kutahya potters for their endeavours to maintain a centuries old craft in the modem context, and wish them every success in their future work." preface by Suna and Inan Kırac.…
