first edition, 385x285mm with a 70mm-wide spine and wrist-wrenchingly heavy, vii,298pp + separately-printed documents, title page printed red and black, 45 illustrations, printed single-sided on card, original documents with initial capitals in colour, contemporary engravings throughout its ages, including a very detailed pictorial survey on Civitas Londinum in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a tinted 1750 plan of the Guildhall and its surroundings, engravings, drawings, aquatints and chromolithographs of the various aspects of the exterior and the interior, statues, the crypt, the chapel, tipped in a double-page full colour painting of the Aldermen's court room with a loose tissue guard beteen the two pages, another coloured double-page of its painted ceiling, and one of the Council Chamber with full attendance, an engraving of the Common Council Chamber, one of the procession of Her Majesty (Victoria) to the State Hall, (one of these plates, rubbed on fore-edge, is loose but the weight of the book holds it in place), smaller woodcuts in text of architectural details, etc., a large (approx. 21 x 21 inches linen-backed folding plan of the Guildhall in 1884 with the new council chamber outlined in red, some spotting on the title page and in the margins of the preface, by and large the text pages are clean but here and there, particularly around some of the inserted plates on card there are some spots in the margins, tinted endpapers a little rubbed on fore-edge, original cloth with the title and view of the main entrance gilt-blocked on upper board, a little faded in places, re-backed in grained leather to tone, with 'Guildhall' and the date gilt, top cut edge gilt.
