A propos de cet article

The first work of its kind in Oman, issued on the occasion of Sultan Qaboos' 30th anniversary on the throne. Original colour photo illustrated paper covered boards titled in English and Arabic, 18x25cm. Printed at Oman Printers. (1)pp colour frontis portrait of Sultan Qaboos, iv pp opening statements in Arabic, 552pp English to Arabic word list with colour photos of military hardware in-text. Covers very good, bumped to the corners with some handling marks, interiors near fine with occasional light creasing. This is the first and apparently only edition. Worldcat locates only 1 copy of it to Sultan Qaboos University, revealing a link to the compiler Dr Musallam Al-Mani, who was in its English Department, and Chief Translator at the Royal Air Force Oman (RAFO). An online search found only one reference in an article by a language teacher at Dhahran Air Base. In his opening statement, RAFO Commander, Major General Mohamed bin Mahfouz bin Saad Al Ardhi announces this to the first work of its kind to unify terms relevant to all branches of the Sultan's Armed Forces. It thus received tri-service input from the Royal Army of Oman (Mustafa Al-Ma'ni), RAFO (Saif Al-Ma'amary), and the Royal Navy of Oman (Suleiman Al-Rawahi). The dictionary itself, stated to contain over 12,000 military terms in current use in both Omani and international contexts, is listed in English in A-Z order. Among the works cited, Al-Ma'ni credits his own "Dictionary of Contemporary Military Abbreviations and Acronyms" (RAFO, 1998), and "The Unifying Military Dictionary" by the Arab League's Arab Armies Committee for Unification of Military Terms(1970). (Ref. Al-Ma'ni (2015), "The Contextual over the Referential in Military Translation", English Language Teaching, Vol 8 No 8; Neil McBeath, "Finding the Right Words; Dictionary Work for Air Force Technicians", Humanising Language Teaching, Year 8, Issue 4, July 2006).…
