A propos de cet article

CRAIG, Clifford: The Van Diemen’s Land Edition of The Pickwick Papers (1973) Hobart, Tasmania: Cat and Fiddle Press, 1973. First edition, limited to 150 numbered copies, this being number 114. A limited first edition of the standard bibliographical study of the Launceston Pickwick, the unauthorised edition of Dickens printed in Van Diemen’s Land in 1838 and 1839. xiii, 65 pp. Photographic frontispiece portrait of Henry Dowling, with facsimile reproductions of the Launceston wrappers, title and Phiz plates. Small quarto, 25 x 18 cm. Original green cloth, the upper board printed in black with a facsimile of the wrapper of Part 1, the spine lettered on a black panel. Pictorial endpapers reproducing the English frontispiece and title page (front) and two further Phiz plates (rear). In the original printed dust jacket repeating the wrapper design. Set, printed and bound by Foot and Playsted, Launceston. In 1838 the Launceston printer Henry Dowling began issuing The Pickwick Papers in weekly parts, without permission, only months after the London parts appeared. Bound up in 1839, it was the first edition of Dickens printed in Australia, and complete copies are now among the great rarities of Australian printing. Clifford Craig (1896 to 1986), the Launceston surgeon and historian of colonial Tasmanian engraving and furniture, gives a full account of the parts, wrappers, illustrations and variant plates. He also gives a collation of the bound volume, a checklist of other books and pamphlets bearing Dowling’s imprint, and notes on Dowling’s newspapers and library. It remains the standard reference for collectors of the Van Diemen’s Land Pickwick and of early Tasmanian printing. Cloth bright and clean, binding square and firm. Light toning to the upper corners of the preliminary leaves, otherwise internally clean. Dust jacket complete, with light rubbing to the extremities and minor toning. A very good copy of the limited first edition of Craig’s bibliography of the Launceston Pickwick, in a fine dust jacket.…

Description de la boutique

I began selling books as a way to share my love and passion for collecting books with other people. I enjoy hunting for special editions, completing sets or building out a library of particular authors. The selling to me, is as enjoyable as the collecting itself. What started as a side project has since grown into a genuine passion for sourcing, researching, and sharing collectible books with fellow readers and collectors. I’m especially drawn to rare and interesting editions, first printings, and the satisfaction of completing author runs or series. Every book I list is handled with the same care and curiosity I’d want for my own shelves. I’m a strong believer in transparency. I photograph books from every angle so you know exactly what you’re getting — no surprises, no vague descriptions. I also take pride in careful packaging and presentation, because receiving a book should feel like part of the experience, not just a transaction. I’m always happy to chat about listings, bundles, shipping options, or anything else — and can almost always make something work. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or requests. …
