A propos de cet article

WARREN, T. Robinson Dust and Foam; or, Three Oceans and Two Continents. New York: Charles Scribner, 1859. Details WARREN, T. Robinson. Dust and Foam; or, Three Oceans and Two Continents; Being Ten Years’ Wanderings in Mexico, South America, Sandwich Islands, The East and West Indies, China, Philippines, Australia and Polynesia. New York: Charles Scribner, 1859. First edition of Warren’s adventurous mid-nineteenth-century travel narrative, an expansive account of ten years’ wandering across three oceans and two continents. The work begins with a Californian emigration passage during the Gold Rush era, sailing through the Straits of Magellan and up the west coast of South America, then expands into a broad Pacific and global itinerary. The narrative includes episodes relating to Rio de Janeiro, the Straits of Magellan, Panama, California, Sonora, Hawaii, the Philippines, Singapore, Melbourne, Polynesia, and other West Coast and South Pacific experiences. Its range places the book at an appealing collecting intersection: Gold Rush-era California travel, Western Americana, South American passage, Pacific voyages, and nineteenth-century American encounters with the wider maritime world. Warren’s account combines travelogue, adventure narrative, and social observation. The reader moves from bustling Brazilian port cities and the long maritime route toward California to the larger Pacific world of island travel, colonial contact, commercial movement, and restless American mobility. The result is not simply a California book, but a record of California’s place within a larger network of oceanic routes and imperial frontiers. The book is illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece and an additional illustrated title page. The illustrated title includes a striking view captioned “Port of Guaymas.—The key to Sonora and Arizona,” linking the volume visually to the Mexico-Sonora frontier and the wider Pacific approaches to California and the American West. The title itself captures the book’s double movement: “dust” for overland and mining frontiers, “foam” for the sea lanes linking South America, California, Hawaii, Asia, Australia, and Polynesia. Published by Charles Scribner in 1859, Dust and Foam appeared at a moment when the Pacific was increasingly imagined as a connected field of migration, speculation, commerce, and expansion. Physical Description Octavo. xiv, [11]-397, [4] advertisement pages. With woodcut frontispiece and additional illustrated title page. Original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First edition. Literature Howes W123. Provenance From the Klaus Werner Collection, noted for material relating to Pacific voyages and exploration. Condition Wear and fading to cloth; pencil marks, some marginal staining and creasing; very good. Description de la boutique

Atelier Zweig Rare Books is based in Marina del Rey, California, and was founded by a couple of bibliophiles, writers, and artists who view the book as a total work of art, uniting text, material, design, and history. We specialize in books of lasting cultural impact or controversy, books whose aesthetic qualities form a complete artistic statement, and books with significant provenance. We buy and sell as collectors first and dealers second, and we value our community of established and emerging bibliophiles who regard books as living cultural artifacts. Guided by the philosophy of Stefan Zweig, we see collecting not as accumulation, but as a creative and custodial act—in which collecting itself becomes an art of creation. Additional curatorial highlights can be found under @atelierzweig or www.atelierzweig.com…
