Ottaway Jr. Professor of Classics at Bard College and author of several books, including Dying Every Day: Seneca at the Court of Nero and Ghost on the Throne: The Death of Alexander the Great and the War for Crown and Empire. He has edited numerous translations of ancient Greek texts, including the Anabasis of Arrian for the volume The Campaigns of Alexander in the distinguished Landmark Series of Ancient Historians. Seneca can be looked at in two ways. He was a writer, thinker, poet, moralist, and for many years the top advisor and close companion of the Emperor Nero. He was also a clever manipulator of undistinguished origin who connived his way into the center of Roman power. He used verbal brilliance to represent himself as a sage. He sought refuge at the altar of philosophy even while leading an assassination plot against the Emperor Nero, after which Seneca committed suicide.
