A propos de cet article

In French, including 14 Plates of production arrangements and machinery engraved by Tardieu from O'Reilly's drawings. In 1799 Jean-Antoine Chaptal, a distinguished chemist and industrialist, discovered steam being used in secret in a few mills in a part of France to bleach cotton and linen under the name "bleaching by smoke", the process originating in the Levant. He then had built an apparatus to copy the process, with excellent results. Using steam reduced bleaching times to hours compared the weeks/months required by crofting - the laying out of cloth in the open air in fields. In 1800 Chaptal was appointed Minister of the Interior by Napoleon. No longer having the time to develop the technology further, he passed on the task to Robert O'Reilly, a French chemist with an Irish name, who was editor of the technical journal Annales des Arts et Manufactures. O'Reilly's work came after a short period of great improvements in bleaching technology: Berthollet, chlorine bleaching, 1791; Pajot des Charmes, improving on Berthollet's methods and improving the safety of workmen exposed to chlorine, 1798; Homassel, further improving chlorine bleaching, 1799; Higgins, proving a cheaper alternative to imported potash, 1799. O'Reilly developed a method of heating, by steam, cloth in rope form that had been saturated in boiling caustic soda without pressure, the caustic soda being recycled. He then used chlorine bleaching as the final step instead of crofting, the whole process saving much time and cost and freeing up land for agricultural use. He also introduced a semi-continuous bleaching system as an alternative to the then current batch systems; this was the basis for scaling up the machinery to meet increasing demand. Edelstein comments that O'Reilly's semi-continuous system was not taken up widely at the time. This this was due to poor rapport between practical dyers resistant to change and academic chemists, who were charged by Napoleon in his post-Revolutionary zeal to increase industrial production. It was not reapplied until the 1940s in the context of bleaching with hydrogen peroxide - a lost opportunity to reduce costs over a long period. O'Reilly also recommended steam bleaching for use in laundries and at home. (i)-(iv), short title page, reference to Plates at end of book, title page, library mark - ICI Dyestuffs Division. (v)-(vi), Homage to Citoyen Chaptal with thanks for entrusting this work to him. (vii)-(xii), Preface, explaining how he has drawn on recent earlier work by Chaptal, Berthollet, Pajot des Charmes and Higgins, and outlining his method of bleaching using steam. (xiii)-(xiv), Contents. (xv)-(xvi), list of 14 single-sided Plates. Pp 1-226, Text; pp (1)-(5), lists of contents of the first four volumes of O'Reilly's journal Annales des Arts et Manufactures mentioned in the text. Then Plates I-XIV, including 36 Figures.
