Item description from seller

The English Arabic Cookery Book Compiled by E. Gertrude Joly First edition. Beirut, June 1950. Printed in Beirut, Lebanon by Dar Al Hayat, Al Hayat Street, Khandak el Gamik. A beautiful and exceptionally scarce bilingual cookbook, compiled by E. Gertrude Joly after 30 years of residence in the Middle East. Published in Beirut in 1950, this fascinating volume brings together a wide variety of regional and European recipes, including dishes, cakes and drinks, presented in both English and Arabic. This is an especially attractive copy of a fragile publication. The original printed wrappers are intact and show only normal shelfwear, with some wrinkling to the corners. The text is naturally browned with age, but much of the book remains exceptionally clean and unmarked. The recipe text appears complete. There is only light pencil notation, primarily in the index. The book contains 239 pages, followed by 17 pages of illustrated advertisements, with additional advertisements interspersed throughout the text. These advertisements are of unusual historical interest and include cooking equipment, linens, wine, candles, baking, importing, household appliances and even a Rolex advertisement. They provide a remarkable glimpse into the commercial and domestic life of Beirut and the Middle East in the early 1950s. There is a printing error at the bottom of page 140 and the top of page 141, where some text has been cut off, and possibly elsewhere in the book. The index and rear advertising gatherings have begun to pull slightly from the staples, but remain tucked into the binding. The paper has naturally browned with age, consistent with the paper stock used for this publication. The scarcity of this book is remarkable. Specialist bibliographic records note only 12 institutional copies traced, making surviving copies particularly desirable to collectors of Arabic books, Lebanese history and rare cookbooks. The work is also notable for its bilingual presentation and its combination of culinary content with contemporary Beirut advertising. A particularly handsome and desirable example of an exceptionally scarce first edition, offering far more than recipes alone. This is a fascinating primary document of culinary, domestic and commercial life in mid century Beirut and the wider Middle East. An important addition to collections of rare cookbooks, Arabic books, Lebanese history, Middle Eastern history, culinary history, bilingual books, vintage advertising, food history and rare books from the Middle East.

Description de la boutique

Driven by a lifelong passion for rare books and the stories they carry, I specialize in curating historically significant works that illuminate the evolution of human thought — from early science and natural philosophy to exploration, conservation, and cultural heritage. My interest lies not only in the rarity of the object, but in its ability to teach, inspire, and connect us to the past. My catalog includes antiquarian books, early printed works, manuscripts and treatises from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on natural history, science, exploration, and the preservation of the natural world. I'm especially drawn to works that document the early scientific imagination — from botanical studies and anatomical treatises to philosophical texts that predate modern scientific methods. You’ll also find books and ephemera related to wilderness exploration, wildlife studies, environmental stewardship, and the history of the American landscape, including materials on Southern Americana and the development of the U.S. National Parks. As someone based in Tennessee, I carry a deep respect for the region’s natural and cultural history, often reflected in my selections. I have a particular interest in provenance — volumes with notable ex-libris, inscriptions, marginalia, and ownership histories that offer a second layer of narrative. These marks of human connection and intellectual legacy are, to me, as valuable as the texts themselves. Each book I offer is part of my ongoing education — and my goal is to pass that learning on. Whether you’re a private collector, institutional buyer, or fellow enthusiast, I look forward to helping you discover works that are not only rare, but meaningful.
