A propos de cet article

Original publisher's light purple cloth binding in a white paper-covered box. Beautiful, ornate illustration on front cover, a gilt illustration of a seated woman looking at a mirror with a tree visible out a window. Gilt lettering on front cover and spine of book. Color illustration on box lid. Box: 7 1/4" x 10." Book: 6 3/4" x 9 1/2." 192 pages, complete. Many black-and-white, in-text illustrations, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for occasional small surface chips (possibly from pages being formerly stuck together); some of these chips are limited to margins while others slightly affect text or illustrations. Binding is tight. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for minuscule age toning to front and back and slight fading to spine. Box is very clean and intact overall but has light surface chipping at extremities and two split corners on box lid. A Fine book in a Very Good box. A collection of sayings about women by noted writers and historical figures, ranging in nature from observational, insightful, praising, to discriminatory. A snapshot into prevailing views of women throughout history to the early 1900s. The following are a few examples of the sayings in this books: "It is sweeter to love than be loved." (Mme. Deluzy); "Man argues woman may not be trusted too far; woman feels man cannot be trusted too near." (Junius Henri Browne); "Woman alone can organize a drawing-room; man succeeds sometimes in a library." (Beaconsfield); "Woman's love, like lichens on a rock, will still grow where even charity can find no soil to nurture itself." (Bovee); "Women have the same desires as men, but do not have the same right to express them." (Rousseau); and "We are foolish, and without excuse foolish, in speaking of the 'superiority' of one sex to the other as if they could be compared in similar things. Each has what the other has not." (Ruskin).…
