A propos de cet article

A highly attractive copy of the rare first edition of Elworthy's classic and influential study of the folklore, traditions and beliefs surrounding the Evil Eye across Europe and beyond. Richly illustrated throughout, this substantial work is increasingly sought after by collectors of folklore, anthropology, witchcraft, magic and esoteric subjects. A large and extensively researched study of the Evil Eye and related beliefs, amulets, talismans, magical gestures, protective symbols and folk traditions from the ancient and medieval world. Drawing upon archaeology, comparative religion, folklore and anthropology, Elworthy examines protective customs and beliefs from Europe, the Mediterranean, the Near East and beyond. Numerous in-text figures, plates and diagrams depicting amulets, charms, magical hand gestures, Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman artefacts, religious symbolism, protective devices and other material associated with the history of superstition and folk magic. The folding plate of the Ethiopian charm and case is present and complete, a feature often lacking in surviving copies (and often therefore not mentioned in sellers' descriptions). Multiple black & white and tinted illustrations are also present. A fascinating and important work that remains one of the classic English-language studies of the subject and a cornerstone title for collectors of folklore, occultism, witchcraft, anthropology and esoterica. Condition: VG. Slight crumpling to the top corner of the front board. Gilt bright and clean, with no dents. A few minor scuffs etc to front board (see photos). Internally clean and well preserved. Pages remain bright with no significant foxing noted. All illustrations and plates are present, including the scarce folding Ethiopian charm plate, which is clean and free from creasing. The frontispiece, title page and original tissue guard are all present and in excellent condition; the tissue guard is often missing from copies encountered today. Retains a small remnant of a presumably contemporary W.H. Smith bookseller's label to front pastedown, adding a modest touch of provenance. Generally, normal age wear as expected. Overall, an unusually well-preserved and highly desirable example of this important work. See photos for true indication of condition, all of which are of the copy for sale; we do not use stock images. Additional photographs are available on request, and please feel free to contact us with any questions.
