Peirce's essay appears on pp. 176-200. First Edition (Ketner P00521).Love is the Foundational and Driving Force of EvolutionThe Crowning Piece of Pierce's MetaphysicsThe First Edition of Evolutionary Love in Original WrapsIn this essay - one of the most fascinating and radically inventive pieces in all of his writings - Peirce provides a historical overview of three different theories of evolution and - in a move that would surprise no one who has read any his essays - creates his own names for them. The first of these he calls "tychism"(from the Greek word for 'chance') which is based on small, slowly evolving changes. This theory of evolution is best exemplified by Darwinism. Peirce takes particular exception to this theory on several levels, but, perhaps most severely by pointing out that Darwin was 'infected' by what he terms the "Economical Century" and its doctrine greed. Peirce claims that Darwin has unwittingly extended the "politico-economical views of progress to the entire realm of animal and vegetable life." This "Gospel of Greed" favors individuals who exhibit the slightest advantage in a world where it is "every individual for himself". He calls it a "ruthless theory" Peirce contrast this "Gospel of Greed" with the doctrine of love found in the New Testament which teaches that "progress comes from every individual merging his individuality in sympathy with his neighbors".The second type of evolution he names as "anancasm" (from the Greek word for 'compulsion'). This is the teleological theory which has arisen and gained favor based the idea of mechanical necessity which has exhibited such ongoing success in the mechanical sciences. While admitting that such necessity is a working element in how thing evolve, Peirce claims that it can hardly begin to account for the facts of life as we understand them today. Peirce admits that these two theories are in fact operative and relevant to any proper understanding of evolution, but he claims that they are insufficient to account for all of the variety found in the world today. To better account for this, he offers a third theory of evolution he calls "agapasm" (based on the Greek word for 'love'). This is the existence of a cosmic principle of love which permeates the entire universe. This third evolutionary force is, he claims, the most important factor in the ever-changing creative formation of new evolutionary forms. Evolutionary love is a cherishing form of love - explicitly brotherly in nature rather than self-loving - because it is the kind that recognizes that which is lovely in another being and sympathetically supports its existence. This kind of loving understanding applies not only to our human life (and, in fact, to all forms of life), but also to the emergence and ascendency of new ideas and beliefs. He claims that within the realm of ideas "all the greatest achievements of mind have been beyond the powers of unaided individuals" with many major discoveries occurring "simultaneously and independently." In short, he says: "I doubt if any of the great discoveries ought, properly to be considered as altogether individual achievements." Peirce takes this to be conclusive proof of the sympathy of minds and hence proof of his theories of agapasm.Peirce's ideas here are firmly based on what he understands to be the true doctrine of Christian ethics. For a man who was so scurrilously vilified for his lack of moral rectitude, it is interesting to see Peirce relying on and quoting so liberally from the New Testament in support of one of his most radical ideas.
