A propos de cet article

First edition. [2], i-viii, 1-271 pages. Staple-bound paperback; H 21.5cm x L 14.5cm. Original dark gray paper covers present but now bound underneath a relatively modern soiled green paper front cover with xerox title text and moderately stained tan rear cover; brown binding tape over spine. Newer covers have some curling at corners with the less stiff front cover scuffed along edges. Original front cover has small chip and short tear to fore-edge with small loss to bottom corner whereas original rear cover has large paper loss (H 3cm x L 9cm) loss at top corner with some shallow loss along fore-edge as well as a chip to the bottom corner. Somewhat triangular clipping and loss to top third of front free endpaper. Bottom corners of pages 259 to rear free endpaper mis-trimmed and folded upwards affecting margin only and not the text. Some light toning to interior leaves but overall pages are quite clean. Bibliographical references: Howes M-535 and Dornbusch III. A famous anti-Lincoln tract by Memphis socialite and suffragist Elizabeth Avery Meriwether authored under the pseudonym of George Edmonds. Among her "Authorities" (page iii bibliography) Meriwether cites a book by William H. Herndon titled "Suppressed Life of Abraham Lincoln" albeit undated but supposedly being published shortly after the President's assassination circa 1866. In fact, Meriwether's alleged resource is a bibliographical ghost, i.e. a nonexistent book, and was perhaps created to cast suspicion upon Herndon's quite flattering 1889 biography.…
