Shirley Hughes (born 1927), who illustrated the front of the dustwrapper and the title-page, is an English children's author and illustrator who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than 11.5 million copies, and has illustrated more than two hundred books. ***'There is a little Italian town where the sky is blue and the sea is warm and the wine is good and no one is to rich or too poor. His friends, seeing his frown, gather round again with their advice. He should get married: Maria would surely be willing. But Maria replies that when she marries, it will be to a man and not to a committee, and poor Giorgio, who knows nothing of women, takes this to mean that he must decided between Maria and Pepi. So his friends revert to an earlier plan - to get Pepi adopted by rich Americans. It happens that a young American couple---' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the true first edition in its original dustwrapper.
