A propos de cet article

xxxiv, 466 pages. Hardcover: H 25.75cm x L 17.75cm. Probable first edition thus (1861 on title page but with 1860 copyright on verso; OCLC does not cite any editions earlier than 1861). Contemporary full red morocco with elaborate gilt decoration to boards and spine; some soiling/staining and toning as well as surface abrasions to boards; scuffing along board edges and joints; spine embellished with five scuffed raised bands although second band from heel has slender horizontal loss exposing swath of underlying back-strip mesh; gilt tooled inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Purple and gold floral patterned endpapers; some toning/foxing to initial and rear leaves but interior pages are mostly clean; faint cigarette odor arises when leaves are riffled but will fade with time. Binding is firm. Still a handsome book - no bindery ticket present but the board and spine elements are indicative of work by a better Civil War-era Manhattan binder. Although titled "Folk Songs" the book is an anthology of British and American 17th to 19th century poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Matthew Arnold, John Dryden, William Blake, Alfred Tennyson, Robert Burns, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., John Keats, William Makepeace Thackeray, Charles Lamb, James Russell Lowell, William Cowper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Shakespeare, among others. Features b/w illustrations by Thomas Nast (4), John McLenan (2), John Frederick Kensett (1), Darley (2), Hennessy (5), Augustus Hoppin (5), Church (1), Macdonough (9), Leon Job (3), Heine (3), Meffert (5), McEntee (3) et al. Please note that this book has an approximate shipping weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.…
