A propos de cet article

116 Pages Indexed. Red cloth sewn binding with gold over black lettering and gold front decoration. Beautiful original condition book with bright white high quality paper pages. Were it not for a hint of age-tanning to the inside of the covers and two light bumps to back cover edge with shelf scuff, this book would grade Fine or As New. Original clear wax paper cover that has 1 inch chunk out of front and one-third of back missing, is included. Our lives are built upon facts. Facts are reality. This is why we call them hard and cold. When we have reached a fact and have understood its meaning we have reached rock-bottom, and, if the fact is a good solid one, we can go no further in that direction. Facts, then, properly speaking, should always be our starting point. It is only occasionally that we can go beneath them, but there is never a time when we cannot rise to infinity above them. Great poems, great bridges, great ships, great temples, and great dreams are all facts. Facts with wings. Everything we are and everything we do depend upon facts. Business is built upon facts, and the man or woman who moves fastest in the swift and exciting world of commerce is the one who has the right facts at instant command. With facts to enrich and authenticate our conversation we become much more acceptable to the social world, and the number of people who are glad to see us is vastly enlarged. Facts bring poise and self-confidence. Facts give value to our work and joy to our play. Facts represent the sum total of man's contact with reality, that is, the sum total of his knowledge. Since this is true, there is no limit to the range over which they spread, almost no adjective which cannot be used to describe a fact. A tax, for example, is a hard fact; love is a romantic one, hate a cold one; the flight of an airplane is a thrilling fact, Beethoven's Eroica a magnificent one; war is a terrifying fact, peace a glorious one. -- A partial quote from the five page Introduction that gives some insight to the journalism of the day. The Introduction closes with Let Us Face The Facts. There is an index of the 365 Facts presented here which begins with Aard-vark and ends with Yorktown. Listed in between are such things as Catacombs, Flora, Nathan Hale, Alexander Hamilton, Boston Tea Party, Moron, Radio City Music Hall, and more. Many if not most of the Facts are illustrated with thumbnail sized black and white photographs, line drawings and all have textual sketches. Printed at the Country Life Press in Garden City, N.J.…
